Grahamwood Elementary to expand in quest to add high-quality seats in SCS
One of the most popular schools in Shelby County is growing.
Grahamwood Elementary is slated for a 10-classroom and gymnasium addition next school year, part of the district's efforts to increase high-quality options.
The school board has already approved the $3.3 million addition to the school for the 2018-19 school year.
Shelby County Schools didn't have an exact number of seats that would be added, but generally elementary school classrooms fit 22 students each. But the school is already overcrowded with more than 1,000 students, putting the school at about 109 percent of its capacity.
About half the student population is enrolled in the school's Optional Program, an enhanced learning curriculum that draws students who qualify from across the county. It's unclear yet if the number of seats available in that program would grow due to the expansion.
