Grahamwood Elementary hosts its multicultural Mardi Gras Celebration!

Rhodes College Professors and Students “Mardi Gras” Band

At the end of February, Grahamwood Elementary hosted its annual Mardi Gras Parade. Grahamwood Music Teachers Danyelle Harris and Melissa Elsholz partnered with Dr. John Bass of Rhodes College’s Mike Curb Institute to engage students in the music, traditions, and cultural diversity that is Mardi Gras. Grahamwood’s teachers had students research Mardi Gras for Social Studies and create costumes and masks for the parade. The celebration drew parents and community members who cheered the Jazz Band as students marched and danced to the music. “Like the New Orlean’s event, Grahamwood’s Mardi Gras celebrated our school’s diversity and the many cultures that comprise it,” stated Assistant Principal Tia James. “As an added bonus due to the rain, the parade took place in our hallways!”
