Bartlett Police Officer Maliskas & Bono demonstrate how the K-9 unit works

Grahamwood Elementary students were treated to a demonstration by Bartlett Police Officer Andy Maliskas on how they utilize specially trained K-9 police dogs to apprehend suspects. Officer Maliskas discussed Bono’s (a Belgian Malinois) capabilities, training, and work habits. Bono performed a search and take-down of a pretend suspect to the amazement of Grahamwood’s 5th grade CLUE students. “I invited the Bartlett Police Department to visit and talk about police dogs,” stated CLUE teacher Laura Wilons. “The students were interested in what the dogs do and how they are trained. It was a great experience for all of us!” Additionally, Streetdog Foundation visited our students. This organization rescues dogs from the streets of Memphis and from the hardships of shelters. They discussed dog care plus how students can do their part to reduce the number of dogs going into shelters. The visits were arranged as a part of CLUE’s study of canines.
