Mardi Gras Parade at Grahamwood

Grahamwood Elementary hosts its multicultural Mardi Gras Celebration!

Rhodes College Professors and Students “Mardi Gras” Band

On February 21st, Grahamwood Elementary hosted its annual Mardi Gras Parade. Grahamwood Music Teachers Danyelle Harris and Melissa Elsholz partnered with Dr. John Bass of Rhodes College’s Mike Curb Institute to engage students in the music, traditions, and cultural diversity that is Mardi Gras. Grahamwood’s teachers had students research Mardi Gras for Social Studies and in Art class they created costumes and masks for the parade. The celebration drew parents and community members who cheered the Jazz Band as it led students around the school track as they paraded and danced to the music. “Grahamwood’s Mardi Gras Parade celebrates our school’s diversity and the many cultures that are represented at our school,” states Grahamwood Optional Coordinator Dr. Jack Maxwell. “The preparation for the event provides an opportunity for our students to engage in a hands on cultural learning experience while having fun.”
