“Diversity is one of the many strengthens that makes Grahamwood Elementary one of the great Shelby County Schools,” states Principal Pete Johnson. “We welcome and celebrate this uniqueness daily.”

This was never more evident than earlier this month when Grahamwood Elementary School’s English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers welcomed all of our ESL learners as well as their families to our annual ESL Night. Parents, grandparents and other stakeholders participated by the hundreds in an evening of information, shared opportunities, and fun.

A number of community sponsors joined us including the Mid-South Peace & Justice Center, MIFA, The Exchange Club Family Center, Tennessee Strengthening Families, WGU, Multi-National Ministries, Community Legal Center, Well Child, Tennessee’s Imagination Library, and Latino Memphis.

Attendees were treated to pizza, beverages and snacks as well as being introduced in their native language to Grahamwood’s teachers and administration. ESL Teacher Robbin Gunn says, “We do this each year so that our ESL families get a chance to meet our faculty. Additionally, we invite organizations and nonprofits to this event to inform our ESL parents of community resources that are available to them.” All in all, Grahamwood Elementary’s ESL Night was a huge success!

All ESL Night attendees get to choose a free book!
