Grahamwood Elementary’s 5th grade Optional students took a trip downtown to explore Memphis history. First stop was the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum to learn about Memphis’ music history and its worldwide cultural impact. The visit was a part of a larger Target grant funded, field exploration that included a docent led tour of the Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art. Students visited Handy Park, took a stroll down Beale Street, and took field notes on notable places, events and Memphians that have shaped our city. Students will now use what they experience to create a calendar on Memphis history complete with researched stories and illustrations. The educational calendars will be given out to share what our students have learned with the community. “I organize this event each year for our 5th grade students,” says Grahamwood’s Optional Coordinator Dr. Jack Maxwell. “The discoveries they made while exploring and researching Memphis history better prepares our students for their ongoing educational journey.”
